Frequently asked questions on European electronic prescription interoperability:
Yes, if you have a health card from one of the following Spanish regions: Andalusia, Aragon, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Castilla y León, Castilla La Mancha, Ceuta, Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Melilla, Murcia, Navarre, or Basque Country, you can collect your prescribed medication in several European countries. You can check the updated list of countries and regions participating in this service at the following link: Status of Countries and Spanish regions in the eP_eD project
Please note that in Portugal, medication is only available in a limited number of pharmacies. You can consult the list here: Check pharmacies in Portugal with the Service Available
. The same applies to the Czechia Republic, with the list available here: Check Pharmacies in the Czechia Republic with the Service Available
.
Also, keep in mind that you can only collect medication abroad if it was prescribed in your home region (i.e., the one that issued your health card). For example, if your health card is from País Vasco region, only prescriptions made in the País Vasco region are valid for cross-border dispensing.
A medicine available in one European Union (EU) country might not be available in another, or it might be marketed under a different brand name. The pharmacist will dispense an equivalent medication.
You can collect any product that has been prescribed to you, except for the following:
- Narcotic and psychotropic medicines
- Medicines containing more than four active substances
- Medical devices and accessories
- Individually prepared vaccines
- Pharmacy-compounded preparations
- Dietetic (medical nutrition) products
If any of these products have been prescribed to you, the pharmacy abroad will be able to view them in the system, but will not be able to dispense them.
You must present the individual health card from your region. If your health card does not include a photograph, you must also provide an official identification document with a photo (e.g., ID card or passport) to ensure correct identification.
The European Health Insurance Card is not valid for collecting medication.
If your health card contains the CIPSNS (National Person Identifier), recognizable by its pattern consisting of at least 7 "B" letters followed by 3 letters and 6 digits (BBBBBBB********), this is the identifier that should be provided at the pharmacy. You can find it in the following image.
If your health card does not include the CIPSNS, the pharmacist will need to enter two identifiers: the CIP (Regional Person Identifier) – which varies in format and length between regions – and the CITE (Community Identifier), which is specific to each autonomous community and follows a 6-digit pattern (8034**). You can locate them in the following image.
You will need to pay 100% of the price for the medication in the country where you are collecting it. Please request the receipt and invoice for the dispensation, and once you are back in Spain, present them in your region to request reimbursement for the amount you are entitled to.
No, you cannot collect medication on behalf of another person. You may only collect medication for yourself, and only after presenting your individual health card and identifying yourself with an official photo ID (e.g., ID card or passport).
Before the pharmacy can access any of your personal information, they must provide you with a document in Spanish explaining how your personal data will be processed. This document is called the “Patient Information Notice”, and you can consult its content at the following link: View the Patient Information Notice
This document explains the types of data processed, the purposes, who may access your data, the legal basis for processing, the retention period and location, and your data protection rights.
Yes, you can ask the pharmacist for the contact details of the prescribing doctor, including their email address and phone number. This information is available in the list of dispensable medications.
